SONY Lens G camera concept could boost the smartphone imaging performance.

Posted on 07:31 by Unknown
WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

SONY Lens G camera concept could boost the smartphone imaging performance.

Sony's new lens-camera concept could boost the imaging performance of any compatible smartphone and breathe new life into the digital camera market.

One of the standout smartphone trends of 2013 has been better and better image-capturing capabilities: from better sensor technology -- as deployed by HTC in its flagship One handset -- to Nokia's incredible lens and sensor combination on the recently-launched Lumia 1020, which is so good it could even give a full professional DSLR camera a run for its money.

However, as Samsung so aptly demonstrated with the launch of the Galaxy SIV Zoom, boosting the camera performance of a phone leads to a few ergonomic and physical compromises. The resulting handset is very bulky and cumbersome when not being used as a camera.

The Sony DSC-QX10 Smartshot, which is expected to be officially demonstrated for the first time at this week's IFA in Berlin, Germany; on September 6, could be the solution to this bulky problem.

It is a HD video and stills camera contained within a lens that connects physically or wirelessly with a smartphone for professional photos, complete with optical zoom when conditions demand. Small enough to drop into a pocket when not in use and big and powerful enough to significantly boost the imaging performance of any compatible handset, the Smartshot could start a new trend all on its own.

It even has its own, dedicated SD card slot so that the massive photo and video files don't take up all of your phone's storage. Recent leaks suggest that it will also support NFC and wifi for easy device pairing and file sharing.

LG display Quad HD AH-IPS LCD for smartphones. World`s first.

Posted on 20:33 by Unknown
WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

LG unveiled its display Quad HD AH-IPS LCD for smartphones. World`s first  2566 x 1440 panel.

The above picture shows a 5.5-inch panel, giving it a 538ppi. As such, says the display maker, this is both the highest resolution and the highest pixels per inch of any mobile display created thus far.

LG Display says results in “more delicate colors” in addition to better contrast and vividness than smartphones currently offer. All of this culminates in images that are said to be both more crisp and life-like, as well as video quality that is Blu-ray equivalent.
Furthermore, the Quad HD panel is said to provide users with a full view of Web pages that is equivalent to what you get on a PC, no distortion or clipping present. Comparing this with Full HD displays, current users would only get access to about three quarters of the full screen experience, leaving a full quarter to be desired. Obviously, this has benefits for zooming in content.
Text is sharper on the Quad HD than on Full HD (and lower) displays, for example. Such a creation comes at a time when demand for larger screens is increasing in the market. The research firm DisplaySearch estimates that LTPS-based handset displays will hit a record of 765 million units being shipped in 2014, something fueled by desire for not only larger screens, but also higher resolution and lower power consumption.
As far as size goes, the panel is 1.21mm thick, and has a 1.2mm bezel in LCM, also earning it the titles of slimmest and narrowest available. The 5.2-inch Full HD panel that LG released last month, for example, is 12-percent thicker than the Quad HD.
Vice President and Head of LG Display’s IT and Mobile Development Group Dr. Byeong-koo Kim said: “LG Display, which pioneered the high resolution mobile market with introduction of the world’s first Full HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology. With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market.”

Brazil: Huawei starts smartphones production.

Posted on 20:57 by Unknown
WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesus.

The Chinese company Huawei Technologies began producing low-cost smartphones in Brazil, the company said Tuesday in a statement.

According to the company, the initiative aims to expand the supply of products to the final consumers and introduce the brand appliances in the domestic market.

"Our strategy is to reduce local production rates and total cost of production to offer devices at an affordable price for the Brazilian market," said chief executive of Huawei in Brazil, Veni Shone, in a statement.

According to the executive, the initial production of about 100,000 devices, which may be extended according to the demand of the consumer market.

The company Compal Electronics, located in Jundiaí (SP), Huawei will be the partner for the production of smartphones.

The first smartphone from the brand that will be produced locally will be the Huawei Ascend G510, which will also be marketed by Vivo in its sales channels.

"Despite the arrival of 4G networks in Brazil, there is much to explore within the 3G technology," said business manager Huawei, Li Kefeng, in a note.

The device has a dual-core processor 1.2 GHz and operating system Android 4.1 Jelly Bean "Emotion UI", developed by the company.

It will be available for a suggested price of 699 reais for pre-paid customers. For post-paid, the value varies depending on the plan chosen.

The split in marketing sales channels live from August 25.

Huawei is in Brazil for over 15 years, participating in the market for fixed and mobile broadband through partnerships with telecom operators in the country.

Q4 2013: LG to mass-produce a new flexible smartphone panel, Samsung working on a similar product.

Posted on 15:32 by Unknown
Francisco De Jesùs, WorldWide Tech and Science.

lg_flexible_oled

LG Display is expected to solidify its leadership in the display market as it will mass-produce a new flexible smartphone panel for major clients from the fourth quarter of this year.

Technicians and researchers at LG say this new development is an effort to meet growing demand for innovative business solutions.

LG spokesman Frank Lee said that his company is looking to meet “the rapid need for display advancements.” Lee stressed upcoming flexible displays, which are bendable and unbreakable, could be the next innovation in display-making technology.

According to the company, LG is investing in flexible displays for mobile devices and new high-tech panels, called organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, which support ultra high-definition (UHD).

“We have completed the development of our first flexible displays. We will mass produce flexible displays from the fourth quarter of this year,” the company said in a statement to The Korea Times.

Company officials said its E2 line at its display complex in Paju is going to handle the production of flexible displays.

“We will apply a 4.5th generation glass-cutting technology for the OLED flexible displays. Monthly capacity for the line was set as 12,000 sheets,” according to the company statement.

The product comes after LG Chairman Koo Bon-moo issued a challenge to create market-leading products with the potential to revive the company.

LG Electronics, the major stakeholder of LG Display, plans to release its first flexible smartphone later this year.

Officials also hinted at selling the screens to other major mobile producers because the company predicts its flexible displays will become the latest mobile trend.

LG’s competitor, Samsung Display, is reportedly working on a similar product.

Samsung Display is still testing its flexible products and trying to increase production yields. It’s highly unlikely that the soon-to-be-released Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Note 3 will have a flexible screen due to manufacturing-related issues.

“Flexible OLEDs will entice handset manufacturers amid growing appetites for a vivid picture, appealing design and thinner displays. The latest development by LG Display should earn a big stake in the growing market,” said Woori Investment Securities analyst Kim Yang-jae.

Kim said LG’s shift toward flexible displays would help the firm beat the industry’s conventional cyclical patterns, making LG one of the few companies that can steadily generate profit regardless of market uncertainties.

Aggressiveness in OLEDs

Flexible OLEDs are just one part of LG’s plan to sweep the global OLED market by increasing its investment in various business projects.

The company, which is the first to mass produce OLED screens and curved OLEDs for televisions, is in the process of developing OLED TV screens that support UHD viewing quality.

To remain competitive, LG works to cut manufacturing costs, achieve lower consumption and advanced viewing quality, said Lim Joo-soo, a manager at its OLED technology strategy division.

“LG Display is developing UHD OLED TV screens. For enhanced brightness, we plan to switch the existing ‘bottom-emission’ tech into ‘top-emission’ tech. The company also has interests in developing materials that can help OLED applications extend their lifespan,” said Lim.

As OLED TVs go mainstream within the next few years, LG is expanding its panel sizes to 65 inches and 77 inches.

According to LG officials, the 65-inch and 77-inch OLED panels will be produced at its M1 pilot line inside the P9 factory in Paju. The M1 line will house more equipment to produce bigger screens, and the M2 line will be mass-produced starting next year.

“This is a strategic decision and it makes sense. With LG’s strong client base and LG Electronics’ television business improving, having an affordable lineup will pay off,” said Woori analyst Kim.

LG Display is involved in a legal battle with Samsung Display over Samsung’s alleged involvement to steal LG’s OLED patents.

Officials at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said they plan to interview Samsung executives and ex-Samsung employees to investigate the claim. The investigation should be finished in the next two months.

LG Expands LTE Market with Compelling Lineup Targeting
Diverse Range of Consumer Needs

LG Electronics (LG) reports that it has sold more than 10 million LTE smartphones worldwide, a result of the company’s aggressive push into 4G markets with a combination of the best hardware and advanced 4G LTE technologies.

“Aggressive pushing forward with 4G LTE technology allows LG satisfy the needs of consumers and is a huge factor in our growing success in global LTE smartphone sales,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of the LG Mobile Communications Company. “Having established ourselves as a major industry player, we will continue to expand our footprint in the global LTE market with a wider range of differentiated, high quality LTE smartphones.”

LG’s success in expanding its presence in this segment is a result of its early entry into the LTE market and its leadership in LTE research and development. Last year, LG launched popular LTE smartphones in significant markets such as the United States, Japan, Germany and South Korea. In recent weeks, the company began a global rollout of its LG Optimus G in an additional 50 countries.

According to Strategic Analytics, global shipments of LTE smartphones are expected to drastically increase to 275 million units this year. LG is aiming to double its LTE smartphone penetration this year, expanding its presence in both established and emerging markets with a variety of devices. New for 2013, LG’s Optimus F series will deliver a high-speed experience to users transitioning from 3G to 4G LTE networks in countries around the world.

Christmas Day 2012: iOS and Android new record of devices activations. Tablets overpassed smartphones.

Posted on 20:47 by Unknown

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Christmas Day 2012: iOS and Android new  record  of devices activations. Tablets overpassed smartphones.

Christmas 2012 Shatters More Smart Device and App Download Records

More iOS and Android devices are activated on Christmas Day than on any other day of the year. This year was no exception. On this Christmas Day 2012, more iPhones, iPads, Galaxy's, Kindle Fires, and more, were activated than on any other day in history. Moreover, as soon as we could tear the wrapping paper off our cool new devices, we started downloading a record volume of apps.  Let’s get into the numbers.

How Did Santa Fit All Those Devices Into His Sleigh?

The chart below shows the number of new iOS and Android devices detected worldwide by Flurry on Christmas Day. With more than 260,000 apps using Flurry Analytics, Flurry detects over 90% of all new iOS and Android devices activated each day. The company regularly triangulates its device coverage with publicly announced figures from Google and Apple.
NewDevices XmasDay 2012 resized 600
In order to appreciate the magnitude of new devices activated on Christmas Day, Flurry established a baseline using the average from the first 20 days of December. Over this period, daily activations averaged around 4.0 million per day, with variance of a few hundred thousand in either direction per day. On Christmas Day, activations soared to more than 17.4 million, a 332% increase over the December baseline. By comparison, Christmas Day 2011 held the previous single-day record, having reached 6.8 million device activations. Christmas 2012 is more than 2.5 times larger than Christmas 2011, which surpassed its own baseline by more than 300%.
With a record number of iOS and Android devices flooding the market, we next look at the surge in app downloads. For these figures, Flurry estimates its percentage penetration per platform to estimate total market app downloads. The company also benchmarks download volumes tracked in its system against publicly released app download milestones from Apple and Google.

More App Downloads Than Partridges in Pear Tress

AppDownloads XmasDay 2012 resized 600
The above chart shows that, compared to the baseline, app downloads more than doubled on Christmas.  Specifically, over the December 1 – 20 baseline, download volumes increased by 112% on Christmas. Despite the ever-growing installed base of existing smart devices, the influx of new devices on Christmas Day still helped deliver a record download day, besting that of any previous day in history.

It Was Christmas All D*mn Day

For our next chart, we look at the distribution of downloads per hour across Christmas Day 2012. The shape of this curve looks like a table top, with downloads jumping early in the day to around 20 million per hour, when most of us were still in our pajamas, and remaining at this level for most of the day, even after the egg nog was gone. For perspective, we compare this to the average distribution of downloads per hour clocked between December 1 – 20.
AppDownloads perHour Xmas2012 resized 600

More of Us Asked Santa for Tablets This Year

For our final chart, we drilled down into the split between smartphones versus tablets.  While smartphone activations typically outpace that of tablets by 4:1, on Christmas Day 2012, more tablets were activated than smartphones. The big winners were Apple iPads, Apple iPad Minis and Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7” tablets. In particular, Amazon had a very strong performance in the tablet category, growing by several thousand percent over its baseline of tablet activations over the earlier part of December.
Tablets vs Smartphones Xmas2012 resized 600
Over the next week, up through New Year’s Day, app download rates will remain significantly elevated.  Flurry anticipates downloads to surpass more than 1.5 billion, and have a shot at breaking through the 2-billion download barrier for the first time ever. We look forward to accelerated growth in 2013, and continued success for developers.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

China Unicom to launch Windows Phone devices.

China Unicom has just signed an agreement with Microsoft for the distribution of  Windows  smartphones, not  specific launch dates have been provided  yet.

The agreement is said to be part of a larger alliance aimed at boosting sales of Windows-based mobile phones in the country and which also involves seven mobile phone makers, including Nokia, HTC Corporation and Samsung, as well as chip makers such as Qualcomm.

This week, the first Windows Phone 8 handsets were launched in the country, coming from HTC and Nokia, namely the Windows Phone 8X and 8S and Lumia 920.

Both of the new Windows Phone 8 devices coming from HTC arrive on shelves with support for China Unicom’s 3G network, it seems.

“As more mobile phone vendors start selling Windows Phone devices, it demonstrated that Nokia made a very bright choice at the very beginning,” said Gustavo Eichelmann, Nokia China chief reportedly said.

China Unicom has over 70 million subscribers at the moment, and will focus on promoting devices powered by Microsoft’s Windows platform.

mHealth Summit 2012: Isonea previews AsthmaSense v1.1 smartphone app.

Posted on 20:48 by Unknown

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Medical technology company iSonea Ltd.  today announced that previews of AsthmaSense™ v1.1, the latest version of its asthma management smartphone app, are available at the mHealth Summit (booth number 501-13), currently underway through December 5 at the Gaylord National™ Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Md. The Company expects AsthmaSense v1.1 will be available for download before the end of 2012.

AsthmaSense is the most comprehensive, yet easy-to-use smartphone app designed specifically to help improve daily monitoring and management of asthma. Users can input their medication, symptoms and peak flow results and set alerts for medication and lung function testing. In addition to using this information to alert the user to potential risk, the AsthmaSense app provides a record of the data for the patient to review with family or physician.

AsthmaSense v1.1 includes new functionality to help better manage asthma symptoms, including:
  • Data synchronization and cloud storage – AsthmaSense is the first asthma app to provide safe storage of users' asthma profiles and event history/trends in a password protected, HIPAA- compliant, patient accessible cloud data warehouse.
  • Trigger tracking - A profile record of personal asthma triggers to increase user awareness of potential risk patterns.
  • Automatic emergency number input – Emergency contact number is automatically inputted into the phone, based on GPS location. In addition, users can edit or input their own custom emergency numbers.
  • Improved help hints - Pop-up "hint bubbles" will appear on certain screens to acquaint the user with app features.
"Since we launched AsthmaSense in June 2012, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, with user feedback consistently lauding the app's features and ease-of-use.

AsthmaSense v1.1 builds on that foundation with new features that allow asthmatics to feel confident that their information is always available, no matter the circumstances," said Michael Thomas, CEO of iSonea Ltd. "In the event that a user loses or breaks their smartphone, the cloud data storage feature means their data is never lost. Their entire profile and information can be retrieved, via the cloud, and uploaded to a new phone or viewed on a desktop computer.

These upgrades reaffirm iSonea's commitment to keeping AsthmaSense the most intelligent, easy-to-use asthma management app on the market."In the United States alone, 25 million people have asthma, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The CDC also estimates the cost burden in the U.S. alone exceeds $56 billion annually, as poorly controlled asthma is associated with increased emergency room visits, hospitalizations and medical costs.

The World Health Organization estimates that there are more than 250,000 deaths globally from poorly controlled asthma every year. The medical community's guidelines, including those from the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), state that regular monitoring of breathing symptoms is necessary to improve medication compliance and successful long-term management of asthma.

It is also recommended that all people with asthma have an asthma action plan developed with their doctor to help control their asthma.AsthmaSense is available for free at the Apple App Store (for iPhone and iPad users) and Google Play and Amazon App Stores (for Android users).

Some features may not be available in all markets; contact iSonea for more information.About iSonea Limited
