Hugo Barra Google Android exec poached by China's Xiaomi.

Posted on 14:17 by Unknown
WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Hugo Barra holds up a new Asus Nexus 7 tablet as he speaks during a special event at Dogpatch Studios on July 24, 2013

Hugo Barra Google Android exec poached by China's Xiaomi.

China's Xiaomi has poached a key Google executive involved in the tech giant's Android phones, in a move seen as a coup for the rapidly growing Chinese smartphone maker.

Hugo Barra, who was Google's vice president in charge of Android product management, said in a blog post late Wednesday that he is joining Xiaomi to help them expand their business outside China, where they already have some market share, but are well behind Samsung and Apple.

"After nearly 5 1/2 years at Google and almost 3 years as a member of the Android team -- the most amazing group of people I've ever worked with in my life -- I have decided to start a new career chapter," Barra wrote.

"In a few weeks, I'll be joining the Xiaomi team in China to help them expand their incredible product portfolio and business globally - as Vice President, Xiaomi Global."

"I'm really looking forward to this new challenge, and am particularly excited about the opportunity to continue to help drive the Android ecosystem."

Android is the Google-developed smartphone operating system that is battling with systems from Apple and Microsoft for dominance in the smartphone market.

It is already offered on Samsung and other phones.

But Xiaomi staked out in just two years a 2.5 percent share in the coveted Chinese market, according to Analysys International, with a strategy of discount prices for phones with high-end features.

Xiaomi was co-founded by a former Google executive, Lin Bin.

"We wish Hugo Barra the best," Google said in an email response to an AFP inquiry.

"We'll miss him at Google and we're excited that he is staying within the Android ecosystem."

Google gives Android mobile operating system software away free to gadget makers and banks on making money from its search, email, maps and other online services tailored to work well on the resulting devices.
International Data Corporation reported early this month that smartphones powered by Android software increased their global market share as iPhones lost ground in the absence of new models being unleashed by Apple.

Android's share of the smartphone market grew to 79.3 percent in the second quarter while that of iPhone slipped to 13.2 percent from 16.6 percent in the same three-month period last year, according to IDC figures.

While analysts believe Apple is well positioned to recapture market share with the release later this year of new iPhone models, there is pressure for a low-price version of the smartphone tailored for the China market.

Barra's move is a win for Xiaomi while likely to have little to no effect on Google or the California company's Android team, according to S&P Capital IQ analyst John Kessler.

"Xiaomi is a really exciting and interesting story when it comes to smartphones in China, a very large market with very big opportunities," Kessler said.

"Getting someone from Google Android's upper-level management presumably tells something about perceived opportunities for Xiaomi."

"We don't really look at it as having an impact on Google," he noted.

China opens world's longest train high-speed line.

Posted on 19:56 by Unknown

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

China  opens world's longest train high-speed line.

The  longest  train high speed line in the world, linking Beijing and Guangzhou, was inaugurated on Wednesday morning with the launch of a first fast train, marking a new stage in the great development of China's railway network, dotted, however, scandals and accidents.

For this release, China chose the day of the birthday of leader Mao Zedong, on 26 December 1893.

The train traveled the 2298 km between Beijing and Guangzhou, the major economic center of the south, in eight hours,  three times less than today. Circulated at an average speed of 300 km / h and made five stops in major cities such as Zhengzhou, Wuhan and Changsha.

Some of the high-speed sections in this line were already operating (Zhengzhou-Wuhan-Guangzhou), but lacked the Beijing-Guangzhou.

The departure of the first train was broadcast live on China Central Television, which also released reports recorded inside the cars, where passengers were seen taking pictures of this inauguration.

The first high-speed rail links in China date back to 2007. Since then, the country built the largest network in the world: more than 8,000 km by the end of 2010, a figure expected to double by 2020.

However, this development forced march was punctuated by scandals of corruption and inadequate security.

On July 23, 2011, a collision between two high-speed trains killed 40 people and left 200 injured in east China, which caused an outcry in the country.

After the collision on a viaduct near Wenzhou, authorities accumulated errors.

Several scenes repeated loop and dissected in the network showed excavators pushing the remains of wagons into a pit. Another amateur video, netizens claimed to see one or two bodies falling into the void, while that caused the fall of a car suspended from the viaduct.

The official inquiry said that there were "design flaws" in signaling equipment and the negligence of the railway authorities, so that 54 responsible, including a former Minister of Railways, were punished.

Before the opening of the new high-speed Beijing-Guangzhou, authorities said they had taken steps to improve the maintenance and inspections of infrastructure (roads, rail and emergency assistance in case of problems).

"Were established the system of emergency and all sorts of preparations to improve responsiveness" in case of difficulty, according to a Ministry of Railways brochure.

But the concern remains. The Global Times, a newspaper close to the Communist Party, on Wednesday quoted a ministry official who recognized persistent problems despite the efforts undertaken.

"We can not be sure that there is no risk in the future. Had a lot of pressure on people," he told the newspaper Zhao Chunlei, deputy head of the ministry.

The line will be operational for the Lunar New Year holidays (mid February 2013), during which hundreds of millions of Chinese cross the country, resulting in the world's largest annual migration.

Video: Can China grow an Apple? Xiaomi sells smartphones half the price of an iPhone5.

Posted on 20:51 by Unknown

Video: Can China grow an Apple? Xiaomi sells smartphones half the price of an iPhone5.

Upstart Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is on track to post $2 billion in sales, with some tricks borrowed from Apple's playbook. But can it remain nimble in the big leagues?

Xiaomi has already sold 300,000 of its latest phone model, launched in October. The Xiaomi phone 2 has specifications similar to those of Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S3 and Apple's iPhone5 but a top-of-the-line model sells for about $370, half the price of an iPhone5.

Xiaomi sells most of its phones online and in small batches.

The first batch of 50,000 phones released on October 30 sold out in less than two minutes. Subsequent larger batches have also sold out in minutes.

"We're not a company that chases sales volume. We chase customer satisfaction. We look for ways to give the customer a great surprise," Lei Jun Xiaomi founder said.

Xiaomi, which was founded in April 2010 and only started selling smartphones in October 2011, is on track to sell 7 million units this year, exceeding its target of 2 million.

Xiaomi is already profitable and is expected to rake in sales of up to 13 billion yuan ($2 billion) this year.

"Our product only sold for a year and hit sales of $2 billion. That is pretty impressive," Lei said, adding Xiaomi was not considering an initial public offering within the next five years.

Tung said Xiaomi's net margins were 10 percent. This suggests its net profit could hit $200 million this year.

In this industry, I think the most important thing is to get love from your customers," Lei said. "If you are popular with your customers, you succeed." ($1 = 6.2253 yuan)

On Xiaomi website you can see the Milet phone 2 priced at $322.- and the Milet phone 1 at $241.-

China Unicom to launch Windows Phone devices.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

China Unicom to launch Windows Phone devices.

China Unicom has just signed an agreement with Microsoft for the distribution of  Windows  smartphones, not  specific launch dates have been provided  yet.

The agreement is said to be part of a larger alliance aimed at boosting sales of Windows-based mobile phones in the country and which also involves seven mobile phone makers, including Nokia, HTC Corporation and Samsung, as well as chip makers such as Qualcomm.

This week, the first Windows Phone 8 handsets were launched in the country, coming from HTC and Nokia, namely the Windows Phone 8X and 8S and Lumia 920.

Both of the new Windows Phone 8 devices coming from HTC arrive on shelves with support for China Unicom’s 3G network, it seems.

“As more mobile phone vendors start selling Windows Phone devices, it demonstrated that Nokia made a very bright choice at the very beginning,” said Gustavo Eichelmann, Nokia China chief reportedly said.

China Unicom has over 70 million subscribers at the moment, and will focus on promoting devices powered by Microsoft’s Windows platform.

China pushing up green energy. Leads.in hydro and solar energy.

Posted on 19:45 by Unknown

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

China pushing up green energy. Leads.in hydro and solar energy.

Potential huge for China to go 'green'

Yet China already the leader in hydro and solar energy
As the biggest producer and consumer of energy in the world, China faces many challenges. The pressure to ensure the supply of energy is increasing and so is the pressure to deal with the associated environment issues.
In response, the Chinese government has been calling for a transformation in the way energy is developed and adjusting the structure of related industries, especially the use of renewable resources.
Since 2005, China has promulgated a series of regulations to support the development of renewable energy, including the law on renewable energy. In the meantime, it has also established a development fund system and attracted investment from diversified sources which has helped speed up the development pace of the country's renewable energy industry.
In 2011, China's installed hydropower capacity reached 230 million kW, the top in the world. The nation's installed wind power capacity of 47 million kW was also the biggest globally. The country also achieved progress in the application of solar and geothermal energy.
Challenges ahead
Although the momentum is strong, the development of China's renewable energy industries is still at an early stage.
Among the myriad of challenges is the cost of renewable energy, which remains much higher than the conventional sources. Wind power costs 30 to 50 percent more than traditional fossil energy, and solar energy is much higher yet, some two to three times more.
Support for renewable energy industries will put more burden on the consumers and require more government subsidies.
Also, China's low-carbon energy technologies lag far behind developed countries, except in the use of solar heated water and methane. The technological disadvantage results in higher costs and less market acceptance.
Last but not least, China's geography makes it hard to develop new energies. Wind and solar power resources are rich in the west, yet the demand in those regions is not that big - instead the enormous demand is in the highly industrialized and populous east where resources are scarce.
Huge potential
Chinese government has set a target of 11.4 percent of non-fossil energy in total consumption by 2015 and 15 percent by 2020. It also pledged to lower the carbon dioxide emission per unit of GDP by 17 percent from 2010 to 2015, and further reduce it by 40 to 45 percent by 2020.
The potential for renewable energy remains huge. Currently, less than 30 percent of the water resources are used for generating electricity. Installed capacity of hydropower in China is expected to be 290 million kW in 2015.
Like hydropower, wind power is one of the renewable energies that has the best potential for large-scale use currently. By 2015, installed wind power capacity will surpass 100 million kW, among which 5 million will be from offshore wind farms.
The 2015 target for solar power is to have installed capacity of above 21 million kW. The country plans to build large-scale photovoltaic power stations on the sprawling western lands, while in the middle and eastern regions it plans to integrate photovoltaic power systems in buildings.
The government also plans to accelerate construction and upgrade of the electricity grid in rural areas.
A number of new energy facilities including solar power stations will be built in the remote farms and pastures. By 2015, the nation aims to have 200 demonstration counties for green energy and 1,000 demonstration villages for solar power.
Through vigorous development of new energy and renewable energy resources, the country is expected to increase its total usage of renewable energy equivalent to 478 million tons of standard coal by 2015. This means the reduction of 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide emission, a great contribution to environment protection and sustainable development of the country's economy.
The authors are Wang Zhongying, deputy director general of the Energy Research Institute at the National Development and Reform Commission, and director of the China National Renewable Energy Center; Zhao Yongqiang, director assistant of the center, and Gao Hu, deputy director of the center.

China: Q3 2012: Androids take 90,1% market share.

Posted on 19:47 by Unknown
WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

China: Q3 2012: Androids take 90,1% market share.

Google's Android platform has taken a 90% share of the smartphone platform market in China. However, as iPhone 5 and many Windows Phone 8 models will be introduced to the China market at the end of 2012, Android's market share is expected to decline.

According to market research institutes, Android has taken more than 70% share of the global smartphone market. As for the China market, which has been dominated by low-price smartphones, the Android platform has taken about 90% of the market. Another research institute stated that among smartphones in China, Android has seen increasing market share from 58.2% in third-quarter 2011, to 90.1% in third-quarter 2012.

Handset makers noted that this is mainly due to the multiple brands and price ranges that carry the Android platform. Also, handset makers added, Android has been excelling in market share because iPhone and Windows Phone have been transitioning to new models.

In China, handset makers have been promoting the Android platform with models priced under CNY1,000 (US$160) which has been pushing the platform to lead in market share. Studies show the average price of Android smartphones in China in the third quarter was CNY1,393, a 10% on-quarter decrease. This average price is far lower than the price of CNY4,523 for iOS handsets. Compared to the average price of CNY3,000 and CNY2,000 for Blackberry OS and Windows Phone, respectively, the average price for Android handsets is also cheaper.

The expanding market share of Android is creating tougher competition for other platforms. iPhone has a sizable market share of 4.2% in the high-end market in China, however, this is far lower than its 14-15% share in the global market.

In the past, China's smartphone market was dominated by Nokia's Symbian platform. In the third quarter of 2012, Symbian's market share dropped to 2.4%.

China: Apple to open new store in Beijing. It is the sixth in China.

Posted on 22:26 by Unknown

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

China: Apple to open new store in Beijing. It is the sixth in China.

Apple Inc. is expected to open a new store in downtown Beijing, its third in the city and sixth on the Chinese mainland, on October 20, the company said Wednesday.

The new store, which will reportedly be the largest Apple store in Asia, will be located on Wangfujing Street, a bustling commercial area.

An Apple spokesman declined to say whether the company will offer the iPhone 5 to the mainland market after the store opens.

Apple's iPhones and iPads are immensely popular among young Chinese. But with only five authorized Apple stores in the country, copycats have sprung up to meet market demand.

Last year, police in southwest China's city of Kunming busted 25 stores that were using the company's logo and selling counterfeit Apple products.
