 Experience new mobile communications freedoms

 Samsung GALAXY Gear lets users to live in the moment while staying connected to their Samsung GALAXY devices. It notifies users of incoming messages, such as calls, texts, emails and alerts, delivers a preview of those messages and creates the opportunity for users to accept or discreetly ignore those messages. When an incoming message requires more than a quick glance, users can simply pick up their Samsung GALAXY devices and the Smart Relay feature will instantly reveal the full content on the screen.

 Voice operation

 The built-in speaker allows users to conduct hands-free calls directly from the Gear, maintaining connections to their mobile communications without disrupting their daily routines. For example, a user leaving the grocery store, whose hands are full with shopping bags, could still make a call by speaking into the GALAXY Gear without touching the screen. Users can also draft messages, create new calendar entries, set alarms, and check the weather on the GALAXY Gear with S Voice.

 Capture daily life from your wrist

 In addition to enabling smart device controls, Samsung GALAXY Gear introduces several features that help users easily capture life’s meaningful moments which otherwise might be missed. With the  Memographer feature, a 1.9 Megapixel camera, users who are on the move or participating in physical activities can record both photos and video to create quick, visual records of important information or events from their daily lives, as well as share them on their social networks. Extending the quick-record concept, Voice Memo lets users capture important thoughts or conversations from their wrists and save those voice recordings into texts on their Samsung GALAXY devices.

 A growing list of controls for favorite features

 With the GALAXY Gear, users gain a wide range of favorite features that further increase the benefits of this new accessory.

 New security enhancement Auto Lock automatically secures the companion smartphone screen any time that GALAXY Gear is more than 1.5 meters away from the smartphone, and then unlocks the smartphone when the companion devices are near each other again.

Find My Device helps users find the location of their smart devices when they have been misplaced by making them beep, illuminate and vibrate.

Totally Confirmed, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be unveiled by Samsung on September 4th in Berlin, at 19:00 CEST (13:00 EDT) , two days before the IFA 2013 event begins.

The Galaxy Note III will feature a 4K (3840x2160) video recording mode, as well as higher-definition 24-bit/192KHz music playback. It  will be mounted with two APs. The 3G model will be mounted with Samsung Electronics’ Exynos 5 Octa 5420, while the LTE and the LTE-A models with Qualcomm SnapDragon 800 and  will feature a 5.7-inch high-quality (full HD, 1080 x 1920) AMOLED display, larger than Galaxy Note’s 5.3-inch display and Galaxy Note II’s 5.5 inch display. The Galaxy Note III will use a camera that can take a UHD-level video, four times clearer than those of HD-level camera.

Benedict Evans, analyst at Enders, discusses word that Samsung will introduce its smartphone-like wrist watch next month, what it means to the mobile marketplace and what he sees for the future of Apple. He speaks on Bloomberg Television's "The Pulse."

Samsung Electronics  will introduce a wristwatch-like device named the Galaxy Gear next month that can make phone calls, surf the Web and handle e-mails, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The Galaxy Gear will be powered by  Android operating system and go on sale this year to beat a potentially competing product from Apple Inc. , the people said.

The device will be unveiled Sept. 4, two days before the IFA consumer electronics show begins in Berlin, one of the people said, asking not to be identified because the plans are private. 

“It will carve a niche for sure as this is an initial product in the market,” said Chung Chang Won, an analyst at Nomura Holdings Inc. in Seoul. “Wearable devices could be one of the trends in the smartphone market, but I’m not sure yet whether watches or glasses will set the trend.”

The Galaxy Gear being released next month won’t have a flexible display, though the company is continuing to work on developing a bendable screen, one person said. It will be unveiled the same day as Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3, a combination smartphone and tablet computer.

Samsung Starts Mass Producing Industry’s First 3D Vertical NAND Flash.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced that it has begun mass producing the industry’s first three-dimensional (3D) Vertical NAND (V-NAND) flash memory, which breaks through the current scaling limit for existing NAND flash technology. Achieving gains in performance and area ratio, the new 3D V-NAND will be used for a wide range of consumer electronics and enterprise applications, including embedded NAND storage and solid state drives (SSDs). 

Samsung’s new V-NAND offers a 128 gigabit (Gb) density in a single chip, utilizing the company’s proprietary vertical cell structure based on 3D Charge Trap Flash (CTF) technology and vertical interconnect process technology to link the 3D cell array. By applying both of these technologies, Samsung’s 3D V-NAND is able to provide over twice the scaling of 20nm-class* planar NAND flash. 

“The new 3D V-NAND flash technology is the result of our employees’ years of efforts to push beyond conventional ways of thinking and pursue much more innovative approaches in overcoming limitations in the design of memory semiconductor technology,” said Jeong-Hyuk Choi, senior vice president, flash product & technology, Samsung Electronics. “Following the world’s first mass production of 3D Vertical NAND, we will continue to introduce 3D V-NAND products with improved performance and higher density, which will contribute to further growth of the global memory industry.” 

For the past 40 years, conventional flash memory has been based on planar structures that make use of floating gates. As manufacturing process technology has proceeded to the 10nm-class* and beyond, concern for a scaling limit arose, due to the cell-to-cell interference that causes a trade-off in the reliability of NAND flash products. This also led to added development time and costs. 

Samsung’s new V-NAND solves such technical challenges by achieving new levels of innovation in circuits, structure and the manufacturing process through which a vertical stacking of planar cell layers for a new 3D structure has been successfully developed. To do this, Samsung revamped its CTF architecture, which was first developed in 2006. In Samsung’s CTF-based NAND flash architecture, an electric charge is temporarily placed in a holding chamber of the non-conductive layer of flash that is composed of silicon nitride (SiN), instead of using a floating gate to prevent interference between neighboring cells. 

By making this CTF layer three-dimensional, the reliability and speed of the NAND memory have improved sharply. The new 3D V-NAND shows not only an increase of a minimum of 2X to a maximum 10X higher reliability, but also twice the write performance over conventional 10nm-class floating gate NAND flash memory. 

Also, one of the most important technological achievements of the new Samsung V-NAND is that the company’s proprietary vertical interconnect process technology can stack as many as 24 cell layers vertically, using special etching technology that connects the layers electronically by punching holes from the highest layer to the bottom. With the new vertical structure, Samsung can enable higher density NAND flash memory products by increasing the 3D cell layers without having to continue planar scaling, which has become incredibly difficult to achieve. 

After nearly 10 years of research on 3D Vertical NAND, Samsung now has more than 300 patent-pending 3D memory technologies worldwide. With the industry’s first completely functional 3D Vertical NAND memory, Samsung has strengthened its competitiveness in the memory industry as well as set the foundation for more advanced products including one terabit (Tb) NAND flash, while setting a faster pace for industry growth. 

According to IHS iSuppli, the global NAND flash memory market is expected to reach approximately US $30.8 billion in revenues by the end of 2016, from approximately US $23.6 billion in 2013 with a CAGR of 11 percent, in leading growth of the entire memory industry.

Q4 2013: LG to mass-produce a new flexible smartphone panel, Samsung working on a similar product.

LG Display is expected to solidify its leadership in the display market as it will mass-produce a new flexible smartphone panel for major clients from the fourth quarter of this year. Technicians and researchers at LG say this new development is an effort to meet growing demand for innovative business solutions. LG spokesman Frank Lee said that his company is looking to meet “the rapid need for display advancements.” Lee stressed upcoming flexible displays, which are bendable and unbreakable, could be the next innovation in display-making technology. According to the company, LG is investing in flexible displays for mobile devices and new high-tech panels, called organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels, which support ultra high-definition (UHD). “We have completed the development of our first flexible displays. We will mass produce flexible displays from the fourth quarter of this year,” the company said in a statement to The Korea Times. Company officials said its E2 line at its display complex in Paju is going to handle the production of flexible displays. “We will apply a 4.5th generation glass-cutting technology for the OLED flexible displays. Monthly capacity for the line was set as 12,000 sheets,” according to the company statement. The product comes after LG Chairman Koo Bon-moo issued a challenge to create market-leading products with the potential to revive the company. LG Electronics, the major stakeholder of LG Display, plans to release its first flexible smartphone later this year. Officials also hinted at selling the screens to other major mobile producers because the company predicts its flexible displays will become the latest mobile trend. LG’s competitor, Samsung Display, is reportedly working on a similar product. Samsung Display is still testing its flexible products and trying to increase production yields. It’s highly unlikely that the soon-to-be-released Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Note 3 will have a flexible screen due to manufacturing-related issues. “Flexible OLEDs will entice handset manufacturers amid growing appetites for a vivid picture, appealing design and thinner displays. The latest development by LG Display should earn a big stake in the growing market,” said Woori Investment Securities analyst Kim Yang-jae. Kim said LG’s shift toward flexible displays would help the firm beat the industry’s conventional cyclical patterns, making LG one of the few companies that can steadily generate profit regardless of market uncertainties. Aggressiveness in OLEDs Flexible OLEDs are just one part of LG’s plan to sweep the global OLED market by increasing its investment in various business projects. The company, which is the first to mass produce OLED screens and curved OLEDs for televisions, is in the process of developing OLED TV screens that support UHD viewing quality. To remain competitive, LG works to cut manufacturing costs, achieve lower consumption and advanced viewing quality, said Lim Joo-soo, a manager at its OLED technology strategy division. “LG Display is developing UHD OLED TV screens. For enhanced brightness, we plan to switch the existing ‘bottom-emission’ tech into ‘top-emission’ tech. The company also has interests in developing materials that can help OLED applications extend their lifespan,” said Lim. As OLED TVs go mainstream within the next few years, LG is expanding its panel sizes to 65 inches and 77 inches. According to LG officials, the 65-inch and 77-inch OLED panels will be produced at its M1 pilot line inside the P9 factory in Paju. The M1 line will house more equipment to produce bigger screens, and the M2 line will be mass-produced starting next year. “This is a strategic decision and it makes sense. With LG’s strong client base and LG Electronics’ television business improving, having an affordable lineup will pay off,” said Woori analyst Kim. LG Display is involved in a legal battle with Samsung Display over Samsung’s alleged involvement to steal LG’s OLED patents. Officials at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said they plan to interview Samsung executives and ex-Samsung employees to investigate the claim. The investigation should be finished in the next two months.

PALO ALTO, Calif. — HP today unveiled a new print offering built within select Samsung devices to provide users an easy way to print directly to more than 180 HP network printer models across the HP inkjet and HP LaserJet portfolios.

The collaboration demonstrates HP’s continued investment and leadership in the mobile printing space by satisfying a common need for today’s mobile user—on-demand, customized printing from virtually anywhere.

Different from current mobile printing apps on the market, the new embedded solution from HP and Samsung requires no setup, tools, drivers or network configurations to adjust on the phone, making mobile printing effortless and convenient. In addition, the print offering is one of the only solutions to offer sophisticated printer settings and options that include duplex printing, color, orientation and paper type. By offering these capabilities and much more, this new mobile print enablement will make printing on the go easier, saving time for the mobile worker and beyond.

Print functionality will be supported with the upcoming release of the Samsung GALAXY S 4 and will be available later this year as a firmware upgrade to the Samsung GALAXY S III and Note II, enabling built-in, wireless printing compatibility.

Users can print in two ways: by automatically connecting their Samsung mobile device and HP printer on the same local network via Wi-Fi, or by using HP technology via wireless direct print.⁽¹⁾

“Customers continue to look for ways to print from their smartphones and tablets,” said Stephen Nigro, senior vice president, Inkjet and Printing Solutions and Graphics Solutions Business, Printing and Personal Systems Group, HP. “This partnership with Samsung is the latest example of how HP is making it easy to print what you want from wherever you are.”

The Samsung print solution is HP’s latest feature for its mobile print portfolio that also includesHP ePrint.

The built-in print solution works in three simple steps: choose a document, photo or web page ;⁽²⁾ select a printer (either on Wi-Fi or directly); and hit print. The embedded solution also offers additional, convenient print options for the user, including number of copies, paper size, orientation, paper type, color mode, double-sided printing and job completion status.

Availability and support

The print solution is compatible with nearly 200 HP printer models across the HP inkjet and HP LaserJet printer portfolios.⁽³⁾

The built-in print button will be available on many applications of the Samsung mobile devices, including: Email Client, Android Browser, Photo Gallery, Contacts, S Note and Polaris Office.
